Phew! They say life comes at you so fast. Well, here I am, 3 months later, living in a new country all by myself! If you had told me 3 months ago that I would stay put here and survive the cold weather, foreign language, and unfamiliar food, I would’ve said it was impossible.
I’ve lived 26 years of my life in Nigeria, so changing environments and moving to a new country is no easy feat. Within the past 3 months, I’ve tried to integrate myself into this new society by signing up for language, dance, and swimming classes. I’ve also been exploring the nightlife, playing weekly five-a-side football games, and doing some touristy activities in between.
It’s been fun for the past few months, but it’s also been challenging. I miss home a lot. Making new friends from other countries has proven more difficult than anything I’ve ever imagined. Also, learning the Portuguese language has been a very slow process. But against all odds, I’m glad I took a bet on myself.
This has been one of the most formidable 3-month periods of my life. I know the beginning has been kinda rough, but I trust the process. I can’t wait to see what the next 3, 6, or 12 months of my life will look like here in Portugal. Welcome to a new dispensation!
