You might be expecting me to say “embrace AI” or “build real world projects” right? Yes, they are very helpful advice but I think a few things are often neglected but proven to be the most critical skills that gets you into the industry.

To anyone trying to break into tech in this new age of AI, you need to:

  1. Learn systems thinking. Enagege your curious mind and go very deep into any domain you’re interested in. Whether it’s networking, or distributed systems, learn how things work under the hood and see how it ties back to every other domain in computing.
  2. Learn branding. Who are you on the internet? What skill are you most competent in? Does your social media profile communicate that so well?
  3. Learn sales. “I built a food hailing app with react-native on the frontend and postgr…” - great but how many daily active users do you have? how many restaurants have you onboarded? code is cheap, sales is where the moat lies.
  4. Lastly, move. Move to where the opportunity is. Move to a big city, a big country if you can. It definitely increases your entire surface area of luck because, as the proverb goes, a moving man will always meet his luck.

See you at the top.
